N97 Apps

Because of it’s slim form factor and ease in which I can bang out an email with one hand, my E71 is usually what I carry around the office. Because of its superior camera, I usually am carrying around an N97 on the weekends. Here’s a selection of apps that I run on my N97.

On the Homescreen

  • Web Browser (homepage set to Google Reader)
  • Calendar
  • Search – under appreciated in it’s power. Why navigate through apps and folders when you can simply find what you need with Search? Search across Contacts, Messages, Music, Saved Places, Apps, Notes, and more from a single search query.
  • Gravity – scrolling through your Twitter feeds has never been more pleasant.
  • Call Log – the real phone book

Photo Apps – Nokia Photo Browser is a great way to browse through photos on your phone and Nokia Image Exchange is a great way to share your photos with the Image Exchange community. Image Exchange can also be configured to silently upload every photo you take to act as a backup.

iSearch is a great little app that gives you a shortcut to search across several internet search services without having to navigate to their home page. A single click and you can search either Google, twitter, wikipedia, YouTube, Dictionary, and other.

Handwriting Recognition - this comes pre-installed but I’m including this in the list because I had the N97 for over six months before I discovered this app. I think it’s power is greatly under-appreciated, it’s very well thought out.

To access handwriting mode, go into an app such as ActiveNotes (another great pre-install) and start to compose a note. If you have the keyboard closed, you’ll be presented with the numeric number pad for standard T9 text input. In the upper left corner of the numberpad you’ll see a keyboard icon. Tap on that and you’ll get a sub-menu that will let you go into Handwriting mode.

Be sure to explore Handwriting Traning module which will walk you through a wizard that teaches the phone how you write different letters. Handwriting Training can be found under options.

If you find you need to solve complex mathematical formulas, you should also check out the Handwriting Calculator. This will not only recognize numbers but also mathematical formulas and will solve them for you!
