    Vampires in Waterloo

There’s a scene in the BlackBerry movie (I rented it of Amazon) where Jim Balsillie, played by “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Glenn Howerton, goes off on the NHL board over a decision he does not like.

It’s a full-blown meltdown with a bizarre line thrown in there that sticks in the back of your mind because it’s so strange but not too out of character because it almost fits Howerton’s character to go off like that.

“I’m from Waterloo, where the vampires hang out!!!”

Tyler picked up on this line immediately as it was an easter egg referring to a video that went viral 11 years ago.

The director was born and raised in Toronto, where this interview took place, so it was probably an in-joke as a wink to his fellow Canadians. So now you know.

One more highlight from our recent visit to the MOMA was a clip from PlayTime, Jacques Tati’s 1967 comedic classic commentary on “confusion in an age of high technology” Tyler insisted we watch closely and upon multiple viewings you can see several story lines un-spool in the background.

You can watch the full two hours online from either Amazon or Criterion but I’ve been told you really should try and seek it out in its full 70mm glory because there are so many details that you’ll miss when you watch it on TV.

Nevertheless, here are a couple of clips just to give you a taste.

    Samurai Smartphone

Shot in the old black & white style of a Kurosawa movie, this PSA from Japanese cell phone provider DoCoMo is done quite well.
